World Computer Literacy Day is observed every year on December 2nd to create awareness and drive digital literacy in underserved communities worldwide.
World Computer Literacy Day 2020: History
World Computer Literacy Day was launched by the Indian computer company NIIT to mark its 20th anniversary in 2001, in response to research which suggested that the majority of computer users around the world were men. It was intended to encourage the development of technological skills, particularly among children and women in India.
Computer Literacy
The term computer literacy was coined by Andrew Molnar in 1978. Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently, with skill levels ranging from elementary use to computer programming and advanced problem solving. Computer Literacy is knowledge of the programmes and tools which are available, but also an understanding of their uses and capabilities in order to get the best from them.
Digital Literacy is another term that is often taken as equivalent to computer literacy. Digital literacy is the ability to use technology effectively and safely and is important skill in today's digital world.
An example of computer literacy might be performing a Google search, whereas Digital Literacy would be knowing which search terms would produce the best results, and knowing how to evaluate which sources were most trustworthy.
