Armed Forces Flag Day - 7 December

7th December is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day throughout the country to honor the martyrs and the men in uniform who valiantly fought on our borders to safeguard the country's honor. It is a day dedicated to India towards the collection of funds from the people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel.

The Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated with the following purposes:

  • To provide the availability of rehabilitation to the families of war victims.
  • To take action on the welfare of the serving personnel and their families.
  • To assist in the resettlement and welfare of the ex-servicemen and their families.

On the Armed Forces Flag Day commemoration funds are collected from the general public through the distribution of flags. These funds are used for the welfare of the staff of the Indian Armed Forces. 

On the Flag Day all three branches of the Indian armed forces, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy, arrange a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes to showcase to the general public the efforts of their personnel to ensure national security

Armed Forces Flag Day

It was on August 28, 1949 that the committee set up under the defence minister decided to observe Flag Day on December 7 every year. The idea was to distribute small flags to the general public and collect donations that can be utilised towards the welfare of army personnel.

Armed Forces Flag Day Fund  (AFFDF)

The Armed Forces Flag Day Fund was setup by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Kendriya Sainik Board is responsible for administration of AFFDF. Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), an apex body of the Government of India, formulates and operates various welfare and rehabilitation schemes for Ex Servicemen (ESM) and their dependents.
