Human Rights Day - 10 December

Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10 December in commemoration of the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human Rights Day

On 10 December 1948 United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, was the first legal document to set out the fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

What are human rights?

Human rights are rights we have simply because we exist as human beings - they are not granted by any state. These universal rights are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. They range from the most fundamental - the right to life - to those that make life worth living, such as the rights to food, education, work, health, and liberty.

United Nations Prizes in the Field of Human Rights

The United Nations Prizes in the Field of Human Rights were instituted by United Nations General Assembly in 1966. They are intended to "honour and commend people and organizations which have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of the human rights embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in other United Nations human rights instruments".

It is on 10 December the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and Nobel Peace Prize are awarded.
