India celebrates National Mathematics Day on December 22 every year. Schools and colleges celebrate the day with different educational events related to Mathematics.
History of National Mathematics Day
On 26 February 2012, Dr. Manmohan Singh, then Prime Minister, declared 22 December to be celebrated as National Mathematics Day. 22 December is the birthday of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the great Indian mathematician. 2012 was also celebrated as National Mathematics Year.
Srinivasa Ramanujan
Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar was a great Indian mathematician who lived during the British Rule in India. Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887, to a poor Brahmin family in Erode, a small village in Tamil Nadu, India. He had no formal education in Mathematics. Yet he made substantial contributions to the field.
He was mentored by the famous English mathematician G. H. Hardy in the early 1910s. He had made some important contributions to the field of mathematical analysis, number theory, game theory, infinite series and continued fractions.
His biography titled ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity' was published in 1991.
