WORLD ALZHEIMER'S DAY- September 21

About 1 in 9 people (10.7%) age 65 and older have Alzheimer's disease. To raise awareness about the severity of Alzheimer's disease and its causes we celebrate world Alzheimer's day on September 21.

Who started World Alzheimer's Day?

In 1994, ADI introduced the first World Alzheimer's Day in Edinburgh during its annual conference on September 21 to mark its 10th anniversary. ADI declares September as World Alzheimer’s Month.

The theme for World Alzheimer's Month in September 2022 is "Know dementia, know Alzheimer's".

What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink (atrophy) and brain cells to die. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affect a person's ability to function independently.

Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist, identified this illness for the first time in 1901 in a 50-year-old German lady. That is the reason why the disorder was named after the psychiatrist.
