Remembering the Young Heroes: Veer Bal Diwas

Every year on 26th December, we observe Veer Bal Diwas to honor the incredible bravery and sacrifice of Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji, the youngest sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru.

Why Veer Bal Diwas?

On 9th January 2022, during the Prakash Purab (birth anniversary) of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the Honorable Prime Minister announced the observance of Veer Bal Diwas. This day serves as a reminder of the courage displayed by these two young Sahibzades in the face of adversity.

The Story of the Sahibzades

Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji were born in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. In December 1705, during the battle of Chamkaur, they were captured along with their grandmother, Mata Gujri Ji, by Mughal officials.

The young boys were taken to Sirhind and imprisoned in the Cold Tower (Thanda Burj) of the fort. When presented before the Mughal leader Nawab Wazir Khan, they were threatened with death if they did not abandon their faith. The young Sahibzades, despite their tender ages—Baba Zorawar Singh Ji was just 9 years old and Baba Fateh Singh Ji only 7—stood firm in their beliefs.

On 12th December 1705, they were martyred by being sealed alive in a wall for refusing to give up their Sikh faith. Their sacrifice symbolizes unwavering courage, loyalty to faith, and standing for truth against tyranny.

The site of their martyrdom, now known as Fatehgarh Sahib, is marked by four Sikh shrines. Each year, a religious fair is held from 25th to 28th December to honor their memory.

How We Celebrate Veer Bal Diwas

To keep the legacy of the Sahibzades alive, the Government organizes nationwide programs on Veer Bal Diwas. These include:

  • Digital Exhibitions: Sharing their life stories and sacrifices in schools and childcare institutions.
  • Screening of Films: A special film on Veer Bal Diwas is shown across the country.
  • Online Competitions: Interactive quizzes and other participatory activities help children learn about the bravery of the Sahibzades.

Why Their Story Matters

The story of Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji is an inspiration for all. It teaches us to stand by our principles, even in the toughest times. Veer Bal Diwas encourages us to remember their bravery and strive to live with integrity, courage, and resilience.

Let us honor their memory by learning from their sacrifice and sharing their story with the world.
